Tesla vehicles use high-voltage batteries to power the electric motor and other electrical systems in the car.
These batteries are specifically designed for use in electric vehicles and are made up of thousands of individual battery cells.
Tesla’s high-voltage batteries are designed to be safe and long-lasting. They use advanced thermal management technology to keep battery cells at optimal temperature and prevent overheating or overcooling.
Although the high-voltage batteries in Tesla vehicles are designed to be safe and durable, like any mechanical or electronic component, they can present problems or fail under certain circumstances.
Some of the potential problems that have been reported with high-voltage batteries in Tesla vehicles include:
Loss of capacity: As electric vehicle batteries are used and charged over time, they can lose capacity and store less energy. This is known as battery degradation and is a common problem with any type of rechargeable battery.
Overheating: Tesla vehicle batteries can overheat if used or charged in extreme conditions, such as very high temperatures or charging too fast.
Fires: Although rare, there have been a few cases of fires in Tesla vehicles that have been linked to high-voltage batteries. In most cases, these fires have occurred after an accident in which the battery has been damaged.
Software glitches: In some cases, it has been reported that Tesla vehicles may have software issues that affect battery performance or even the safety of the car. It is important to note that a Tesla battery is made up of modules that contain tens of cells (approx. 70 cells per module) and normally you can have 96 modules. More than 7000 cells are estimated.
If one of these cells fails, the system will start to generate alerts.
Also, in certain cases, if a battery discharges below 10%, an imbalance can occur and the vehicle can no longer be charged.
The services available for the High Voltage Battery are:
- Battery health assessment.
- Balancing and electric balance of cells.
- Eventual repair if possible.
